Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance Quest Navigation Demon Poll Starts

Atlus is one of the leading publishers and developers when it comes to Japanese role-playing games. From 2020 forward, Atlus is putting its best foot forward when it comes to releasing JRPGs in the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series and beyond. When it comes to the best recent Atlus JRPGs from 2020 and beyond, these are the games that excel when it comes to visuals, gameplay, and content.

Best Recent Atlus JRPGs: Persona 5 Royal 6a532f

Persona 5 Royal is the pinnacle of not just an Atlus game but JRPGs in general. The story of the Phantom Thieves is rife with some of the most stylish and satisfying turn-based gameplay of all time. It also has an excellent cast of characters that rewards the player for taking the time to get to know them. Plus, it has unbelievable value with well over 100 hours of content.

Persona 3 Reload 3w5w64

This remake of the original Persona 3 isn’t perfect, but it at least makes the game worthwhile for newer players. The beautiful visuals give previous Atlus games a run for their money, while the story is still simply the best in the franchise. It does have some pacing and repetition issues with the main Tartarus dungeon, but this is one of the best ways to play it.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance 376a50

The original SMT V is one of my personal least favorite Atlus JRPGs, but this complete version sold me on it. The updated visuals and performance with newer platforms takes the frustration of this open-world-like experience. It is much smoother and it includes a new storyline that is more character-driven and much better than the also included original.

Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection 3a2x2d

I’m not entirely sure why this game is so darn expensive, but you get the first three Etrian Odyssey adventures in one package. These games are some of the strongest first-person dungeon-crawlers in existence. The level of polish is great, plus the party customization provides so much depth. It is missing some features from some of the 3DS remakes but still worth a pick up.

Unicorn Overlord 446r4d

This bizarrely great Vanillaware title is like an active tactical RPG. The pace and style of the battles in Unicorn Overlord takes some getting used to, but it works well when it clicks. The art style is classic sublime Vanillaware, while the story is actually pretty darn good. If you want something a bit different from the usual turn-based games on this best recent Atlus JRPGs list, this is the one to pick up.

shin megami tensei v vengeance demon navigator poll mothman

Atlus West has announced the results of the demon navigator poll for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, with Mothman winning on the western side. This poll determines which new demons will appear as navigators in a future update.

In total, there will be six new demon navigators in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, which Atlus will add soon into the game soon. Three of the six won the western vote and the other three won the Japanese vote. From the west (in order of their ranking in the poll), we have Mothman, Idun, and Fionn mac Cumhaill. The Japanese votes (again, in order of their ranking) are Mara, Cleopatra, and Hell Biker.

Here is the full top 10 list:

  1. Mara
  2. Idun
  3. Mothman
  4. Fionn mac Cumhaill
  5. Hell Biker
  6. Cleopatra
  7. Mephisto
  8. Cerberus
  9. Jack Frost
  10. Yoshitsune

The discrepancy between Atlus West stating that Mothman was in first place, yet Idun is above it in the Japanese list is unclear. But it's likely due to a difference in regional votes.

Why Mara won the Japanese vote may not be a surprise considering what the demon looks like. As for Mothman, the thing is quite popular among fans due to its cute design and baffled expression. Of the immediate replies to Atlus West’s Tweet, the vast majority of s are happy to see Mothman, citing that the win represents West Virginia, Mothman Nation, and whatnot.

Demon navigators in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance are helpful demons who specialize in their own category of items. They can help you find them, as well as combat encounters. So if you want a specific item and your navigator isn’t helping you with that, you may need to switch navigators.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is readily available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.

Sega merchandise at Sega-Atlus Tokyo Game Show TGS 2024 booth

Sega and Atlus have updated their annual Tokyo Game Show website with the TGS 2024 edition. The companies have yet to announce the list of games they will feature at the event. However, they have revealed the list of items that will be available for purchase at their t merchandise booth.

The lineup will include franchises from both companies. Sega is listing items from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise—including those branded with the title Sonic X Shadow Generations—and the Like a Dragon series which was formerly known as Yakuza. Meanwhile, Atlus will bring in items themed after Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance as well as Persona 3, 4, and 5 titles.

Some of the items in the list are also available for online pre-orders. Amazon Japan will release the items on October 12, 2024, and it can also ship them internationally. However, it only lists items from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog and Like a Dragon series. That means people who are after Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei and Persona merchandise will have to get the items directly from the physical booth at TGS 2024.

Tokyo Game Show 2024 will take place at Makuhari Messe in Chiba on September 26-29, 2024. Sega and Atlus will set up their TGS 2024 merchandise booth at Hall 11.

Chimney Group revealed that it will produce and sell new drinks inspired by characters and demons from Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. The drinks will be available for a limited time from late July 2024 and throughout August 2024.

smt v yoko chiwa saito

Atlus shared commentary from Chiwa Saito, who voiced Yoko in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (SMT V: Vengeance). Past interviews included ones with Lynn and Saori Hayami.

Here is a translation of what Saito said about her character and the game:

"Yoko is a girl who seems like she’s accepted and is resigned to her situation, but she’s going through a lot of anxiety in her own way. I performed her lines hoping that I could express her inner thoughts.

I was in a Persona game in the past, so I was happy that they [Atlus] reached out to me again. Personally, I have a bit of a sad memory with Persona. My little brother, who’s six years younger than me, once told me, “Chiwa-chan, you suck so you’re not allowed to play!” while he as playing Persona and didn’t give me the controller lol.

Humans (angels and demons too) are so complicated because depending on how you look at a situation, you can see a lot of different circumstances or forms of justice. The story really made me ponder on that. It’s one that teaches you how important it is to imagine yourself in someone else’s shoes and show them consideration. I hope you enjoy it!"

Aside from voicing Yoko Hiromine in SMT V, Chiwa Saito also voiced Metis in Persona 3 FES, Senjougahara in the Monogatari series, and Homura in Puella Magi Madoka Magica. She also voiced several different characters in the Fate series, as she portrayed Chloe and all of the iterations of Tamamo no Mae.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance will come out on June 14, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.

Atlus games are the heartbeat of my love for gaming, be it Persona or Shin Megami Tensei. However, the original Shin Megami Tensei V severely disappointed me in of its empty world, forgettable characters, bland storyline, and lackluster performance. Fortunately, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is the true definitive version, addressing all of my concerns and then some.

In some aspects, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is akin to what Apocalypse is to SMT IV, as it is a better game with a stronger story in the same world, but also unique at the same time. For the most part, Vengeance is the game this JRPG should have been from the start. I will go ahead and say it right now. Outside of 100% completing the JRPG, there is no reason to go back to the original Canon of Creation storyline.

Screenshot by Siliconera

The new Canon of Vengeance path feels much better in every single aspect. The start of the story is pretty much identical to the original plot, but with some neat twists. For one, you get new characters like Yoko who accompany the player from pretty early in the story. This is one of the best changes in Vengeance, as the game feels much more alive with frequent character development. Most of the plot has at least one, if not two, other people journeying alongside the Nahobino. They can even optionally fight alongside you in battle, Persona-style, if you so choose, but they don’t have to.

Comments and interjections from party like Yoko on the main plot points, developments, and even side quests are a welcome addition. They feel so natural, such as musing over whether or not I should’ve helped out a particular demon in a side quest. This makes replaying the almost identical first half of this JRPG so much more vibrant and thrilling. It didn’t feel like trudging through this barren open wasteland without much purpose. I wanted to keep going to see how the story would change or what Yoko and others had to say about my choices.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Without delving into spoilers too much, the plot of Canon of Vengeance is solid from start to somewhat awkward finish. The highlight of the original SMT V for me was the first dozen hours or so. Adventuring through the initial Da’at area felt exciting and mysterious in the original, plus the more horror-like high school dungeon section afterward felt like the peak part of the story. Fortunately, Canon of Vengeance takes the best parts of the cast from that initial dozen hours I loved and included it throughout the rest of the game. You spend so much more time with all of the cast in the main story. This even sometimes happens through limited-time side quests that flesh them out more.

SMT V: Vengeance completely changed my perspective on certain characters. I won’t spoil things here. However, I went from disliking them in the original to now loving them. There are even some characters I still hate, but with an even more burning ion than before because they had the proper time to develop their motivations better and earn that ire.

Even better yet, there is a brand new area exclusive to Canon of Vengeance. Fortunately, it is also the best open-world area to explore as well. Players can now visit Shinjuku in Da’at. This area is absolutely massive. You start out in the gorgeous, purple-themed Shibuya, and you literally travel from that ward all the way to Shinjuku. The area is a refreshing break from the other areas. It is so detailed and just keeps going. In fact, it trades out the Chiyoda map in this story path, which I felt was by far the most annoying area in the original, so that made me happy as well.

Screenshot by Siliconera

The only real downside to the Canon of Vengeance storyline is the ending. There are two new endings to unlock in this game, and they felt a bit lackluster to me. They didn’t necessarily move the needle as much as I would have liked, especially with everything else this version changes.

When it comes to the gameplay, though, we see the classic turn-based Press Turn system at work with some minor, but helpful, improvements. You pick to attack, use skills that cost MP, defend, and so on each turn. These tactical battles are just as challenging, freeform, and stylish as before. That said, there are a lot more ultimate Magatsuhi Skills to unlock and use in battle, and you’ll want them, too. After all, the new Canon of Vengeance storyline felt much more challenging than the base game with its new bosses.

There is an early boss, for instance, who has a weakness to physical, but nullifies basically everything else. You would think this would make for a swift and breezy fight then, right? Just mash away the attack button or use physical skills and you’ll gain extra turns, so it sounds pretty easy. Well, the boss makes up for its weakness with unbelievably powerful attacks and various status effects. These skills nearly obliterated my early party on the Normal difficulty. This continues through the rest of the game with each boss truly forcing the player to reevaluate their team and make use of the Essences to change resistances, skills, and the like.

Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance SMTV Vengeance Review

Playing this game on the PS5 meant the battles were much smoother and swifter than ever before as well. The frame rate was steady no matter what I was doing, including exploration. Speaking of which, the exploration felt much more engaging. This is especially true with the neat quality-of-life features like new open-world shortcuts you can find and unlock.

This made me want to uncover every inch of each open map area and find every secret. I actually wanted to do every side quest as well, especially the new ones. Most of the newer optional content has quick, witty, and intriguing storylines worth checking out. There is one recurring side quest storyline following the Hare of Inaba wanting to stronger, which I adored. There are even more experimental quests where you can briefly take on the role of demons. One of my favorites was this puzzling and comedic whodunnit case.

In general, the demons have much more fascinating personalities than ever before. This is seen through the side quests and the new Demon Haunt area. This new location lets players interact with demons, give them gifts, and receive gifts in return. It almost feels like a very light bond system with the demons and other party . This all added a nice touch. Even some of the previous DLC from the base game feels more naturally integrated into the world. This even includes the beloved Return of the True Demon side quest.

In the end, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance accomplished exactly what I hoped for. It took the messy base game, made it look and play better, and expanded upon every single aspect. This results in a polished and finally complete experience worth (re)visiting. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance reaches its full potential in almost every way possible and now confidently stands toe-to-toe with its predecessors.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance releases for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on June 14, 2024.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance releases for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on June 14, 2024.

shin megami tensei v sahori

Lynn, who voiced Sahori Itsukishima in Shin Megami Tensei V, made a comment regarding the release of Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance. As a reminder, this will be the definitive version of Shin Megami Tensei V.

Here is the full comment from Lynn about her character Sahori in Shin Megami Tensei V:

“I just feel so bad for Sahori. It wasn’t like she was doing anything wrong... I believe that everyone will feel negative emotions at some point in their life, but it was painful to see how she wavered because someone took advantage of her feelings.

When it was announced that I’d be in Shin Megami Tensei V, I was happy to hear a lot of people say “You’re going to be in the Shin Megami Tensei series?! That’s awesome!” I was also glad to hear so many people enjoying it after it came out. Since this is the definitive version of Shin Megami Tensei V, that means it powered up even more, right? I’m even more excited for it now! Sahori’s scenes are the ones that made the most impression on me so I can’t help but feel like saying, “Don’t lose to sadness, everyone!” but of course, I believe that there will be some salvation for the characters. I hope you enjoy the game.”

Aside from her role as Sahori, Lynn has starred in multiple video games and anime. Some of her more prominent roles include Miorine in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, Sakura Yamauchi in I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, and Princess Hibana in Fire Force. For video games, Lynn has also appeared as Azura in Fire Emblem Fates, Mei in Overwatch, and Damselette in Genshin Impact.

Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance is, as mentioned earlier, the definitive version of the original game. Like with re-releases such as Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal, Vengeance will include a new storyline, locations, and demons. If you get the digital deluxe edition, you can also get the Konohana Sakuya and Dagda subquests.

Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance will come out on June 14, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.
