Pixelity announced that it has started working on new XR (Extended Reality) games based on Neon Genesis Evangelion. The company added that it has signed a contract with the Evangelion franchise owner Khara, which gave it a license to create games based on the classic anime title.

The company also specified that it will base the games on the 26-episode anime show that aired on television in 1995, rather than the Rebuild of Evangelion movies that ran from 2007 to 2021. It will also split the project into three episodic parts—in a similar fashion to Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Remake project. The first entry is slated for release in 2026.

Pixelity will produce the Neon Genesis Evangelion XR games with Action Adventure as the genre. The player will enter the anime's world as a new original character, and they will also be able to interact with the series' existing characters like Shinji and Rei. The games will have players undergo missions while witnessing immersive battles between the Evangelion units and the Angels.

The first of the three episodic Extended Reality games based on Neon Genesis Evangelion is planned for release in 2026. Pixelity will publish more details about the game, including its full title and platform list, at a later time.

NHK has revealed that it will air a radio show focusing on Hideaki Anno and two of his anime series. The show, titled "Today is a Whole-Day Focus on 'Hideaki Anno's World,'" will go live on February 11, 2025.

The radio show will have a particular focus on two of Hideaki Anno's anime, both of which will celebrate major anniversary milestones in 2025. The Neon Genesis Evangelion anime show is having its 30th anniversary since it premiered in 1995. The other title will be Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, the 1990 anime show that has its 35th anniversary in 2025. As a side note, while the Evangelion franchise has been more frequently featured in the Super Robot Wars crossover games, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water made its debut in the 2018 entry Super Robot Wars X.

Despite featuring Hideaki Anno, the man himself will not appear at all in this radio show. The announcer Azusa Miyazaki will host the show, with the anime and tokusatsu researcher Ryusuke Hikawa providing explanations. The radio show will also feature Teresa Ikeda, Nagi Inoue, and Haruka Kaki—three from Nogizaka 46 who are also known as avid Evangelion fans—as guests.

The NHK radio show "Today is a Whole-Day Focus on 'Hideaki Anno's World'" will be aired on the NHK FM channel on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 12:15 PM until 6:50 PM JST.

The latest collaboration between McDonald's Japan and Neon Genesis Evangelion has certainly been an attention-grabber. From the amusing commercials to the freshly-designed original McDonald's-themed EVA Unit UNIT-M to the transforming toys, it has been hitting all the right notes. At the heart of this unusual mash-up lie the Evangelion burgers, three special limited-time menu items. You may have seen promotional pictures of them already, but what is the reality? And most importantly, how do they taste? There's only one thing for it: I had to try them out.

In order to keep my doctor and wife from getting too upset, I properly prepared for this potentially stomach-destroying effort. Okay, I just had a light brunch and drank a lot of water, but I'm telling myself that's good enough. After finishing work for the day, I hopped in the car and headed for the nearest Makku. While I considered taking the easy way out by going through the drive-through, I wanted to check out some of the in-store signage. So in I went. I placed my order for all three burgers, then checked things out while I waited.

After taking a few pictures, I grabbed my order and drove back to my office. In total, there are three Evangelion burgers at McDonald's, each with a particular character assigned to them. Representing Shinji Ikari, we have the Double Teriyaki Cheeseburger. The enigmatic Rei Ayanami adorns the wrapper for the Hashbrown & Beef Burger with Garlic Mayo. Finally, the fiery Asuka Langley is paired with the Mexican Cheese Chicken Burger. I wouldn't think too hard about how those are supposed to line up. Well, let's dig in.

This was the one I was the most interested in trying. The special burgers from McDonald's Japan can be hit or miss at times, but they rarely miss when they try to go spicier. This isn't a particularly fancy sandwich, but on paper it seems like it would work. The usual chicken filet patty is placed in a special fluffier-than-usual bun and topped with a slice of processed cheddar cheese, a couple of pickles, taco meat, and a sweet lemon sauce. McDonald's Japan issues a warning that this sandwich is spicy, so if you don't like spicy food you should be careful. This typically doesn't mean much, but upon opening the wrapper there was a certain spiciness wafting off of the burger.

The Mexican Cheese Chicken Burger kicked off what turned out to be a theme with these Evangelion burgers. It was quite messy to eat and its contents were prone to spilling out. The first bite I took was quite delicious. I got a good bite of pickle and taco meat, and the result was a pleasantly spicy and flavorful taste. The sweet lemon sauce had a nice tang to it, too. The chicken filet patties at McDonald's Japan can be a little bland, so having these peppy ingredients in the mix really helped out.

Sadly, the ingredients weren't evenly distributed. Some bites had no pickles and very little taco meat, and when that happened it really demonstrated how important those two elements are to this burger. My hands were in an absolute state by the time I finished this one, but that's what soap and water is for. All in all, I rather enjoyed the Mexican Cheese Chicken Burger. It could have used a little more tsun in its tsundere, but overall it's one I would order again. Best burger for the best character? I guess we'll see as we continue on.

Score: Eight "ANTA BAKAs" Out of Ten

A real gap between the McDonald's Evangelion crossover marketing photo and the reality for this one, but we all know how that goes. The Hashbrown & Beef Burger with Garlic Mayo comes off as the busiest of this bunch. You've got the same fancy bun we saw with the Mexican Cheese Chicken Burger, with a thicker-than-usual beef patty. From the bottom to the top, you get some tangy steak sauce, a slice of processed cheese, a hashbrown potato patty, the aforementioned beef patty, and some garlic mayonnaise sauce. Surprisingly, this is not the highest-calorie sandwich of the three. That would be the next one.

The scent of garlic hits you as soon as you open the wrapper. And that proved to be the case for the Hashbrown & Beef Burger with Garlic Mayo as a whole. Biting into it, I found the garlic mayo overpowered every other flavor. The hashbrown pretty much melted into the rest of the burger. Since this burger is lacking any crunchy vegetables, I was hoping the hashbrown would add a bit of texture to the sandwhich. Unfortunately, it was quite soft. The hashbrown and beef patty took turns trying to fall out with each bite, too.

Ultimately, the Hashbrown & Beef Burger with Garlic Mayo sees the rest of its flavors lost in the powerful taste of the garlic sauce. I like garlic as much as the next person, but I couldn't help but feel a little empty about this burger. For how much it appears to have going on, it's completely one-note. Those who hate garlic cannot love or trust this sandwich. Rei, you got robbed. Hopefully the last of the Evangelion burgers can bring this back around. Shinji, don't let us down!

Double Teriyaki Cheeseburger 3362y

I'll say straight-up that I wasn't very excited by the Double Teriyaki Cheeseburger in the way I was for the other two. It's not that I was expecting it to taste bad or anything like that. The reason is that this is really just a Teriyaki McBurger with an extra pork patty and a slice of processed cheese. On top of that, McDonald's Japan has offered the Double Teriyaki Cheeseburger before without a Shinji endorsement. The only new thing here is the bun, which is the same special one used by the other two Evangelion burgers. The filling is two pork patties generously slathered in sweet teriyaki sauce, the aforementioned slice of processed cheese, some lettuce, and a large dollop of tangy mayonnaise.

If you've never had the Teriyaki McBurger before, there are a few things to know. First, it's very tasty. The sweetness of the teriyaki sauce and saltiness of the pork patty make for an enticing blend, and the mayo adds to the nasty decadence of it all. The lettuce is just there to make you feel better, as it will most likely be rendered fully limp by the time you start eating. Second, it's really messy. When you open the wrapper, it's like an explosion went off. You will get your hands dirty eating it, so plan ahead. Third, because it's such a saucy burger, the contents like to spill out of the bun. The more McDonald's tries to cram in there, the more it wants to spill out. Indeed, the second pork patty and slice of cheese in the Double Teriyaki Burger make it hard to keep a handle on.

The Double Teriyaki Cheeseburger is good, but it's just a bigger Teriyaki McBurger. The extra pork patty doesn't hurt the balance of the burger, and cheese is always welcome. Still, it feels like an opportunity was missed here. For such a big collaboration, having one of the burgers be a recycled one that wasn't very exciting to begin with is a bit of a disappointment. Surely the main character of the show deserves something a little cooler. Then again, it's Shinji. Maybe this is just what he deserves. Reliable, a little on the plain side, and if the others can't get it done then this might be your hero.

Closing Thoughts on the McDonald's Evangelion Burgers 1z6p6n

Overall, this isn't a bad batch of burgers. Sure, the Hashbrown & Beef Burger with Garlic Mayo comes off like an oily garlic ball, but McDonald's Japan has unleashed far worse before. With that said, I feel like McDonald's could have done more to lean into the theme. Despite the name, the Evangelion Burgers feel like they could have been slotted in during any number of McDonalds campaigns, and it feels like very little attempt was made to fit them to the Evangelion brand. Even so, I'll stop in and get the Mexican Cheese Chicken Burger once more before it's gone. If you happen to be visiting McDonald's Japan this month, that would be my recommendation. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go hit the treill for about six hours.

McDonald's has shared another Neon Genesis Evangelion commercial as part of it's collaboration with the IP. However, unlike the previous commercial, this one reuses scenes from the anime and does not feature the uniquely designed EVA Unit. The commercial was published on X, also formerly known as Twitter.

The collaboration began on January 6, 2025, with the initial announcement appear in late December 2024. This included a look at a special EVA Unit, UNIT-M, which features the signature colors of the fast food chain, gold and red. The collaboration menu will include the Mexican Cheese Chicken Sandwich, he Hash Brown and Beef Burger with Garlic Mayo, and the Double Teriyaki Cheeseburger.

Alongside the release of collaboration items, a series of special toys will be available to obtain via a lottery system. This includes toys based on the EVA models for Shinji, Rei, and Asuka. However, these are a limited run item, and will be available until January 10, 2025. Which means consumers have four days to potentially grab one, if they're lucky enough. The toys can be purchased through the McDonald's app, and are exclusive to Japan.

Sega Plaza announced the Rei Ayanami (Tentative Name) Neon Genesis Evangelion Plugsuit figure is back in stock. Consumers can obtain it at participating locations in Japan starting January 25, 2025. This is to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Neon Genesis Evangelion airing on television.

In April 2024, DragonHorse Inc. announced the production of a new Mortal Mind action figure of the Evangelion Final Model. It came with it's own pedestal and additional hand parts. The figure was subsequently released on April 5, 2024.

Neon Genesis Evangelion originally began its run in Japan in October 1995. Evangelion: Death (True)2, the edit of 1997’s Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, appeared in 1998. The End of Evangelion appeared in 1997. The Rebuild of Evangelion films, which offer a different take on the story, began airing in Japan in 2007 with Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo appeared in 2009 and 2012. The Evangelion Asuka and Rei Look Up figures are available once again via Megahobby. They do not come as a set, so if you want both, you’ll need to purchase them separately.

Each Evangelion Look Up figure costs 4620 JPY (including tax), which would convert to approximately $30.20. They’ll ship out in late May 2025. Megahobby originally released these figures in December 2023, and they shipped out in June 2024 of this year. If you prefer the Evangelion boys, Megahobby also released Look Up figures of Shinji and Kaworu. These are not available right now via Megahobby though, so if you want them, you’ll need to purchase them secondhand or from another store.

Look Up figures are small palm-sized figures from Megahobby showing the character in question looking upwards. They usually have a chibi design, which makes them quite cute. While you can display them at home like a normal figure, their small size and particular pose means that you can also bring them outside and pose them next to something for photos. Some of the pictures on Megahobby’s site has the Look Up figures sitting next to food and drinks.

The Evangelion Asuka and Rei Look Up figures are re-running for a limited time and they’ll come out in late May 2025.

Neon Genesis Evangelion will return to White Cat Project with swimsuit outfits for everyone. The collaboration started on August 9, 2024 and will run until August 22, 2024. [Thanks, Nordot!]

During this event, you’ll be able to get Ikari Shinji, Ayanami Rei, Shikinami Asuka Langley, Makinami Mari Illustrious, and Nagisa Kaworu in the gacha. All of these characters are from the Rebuild of Evangelion film series timeline rather than the original show, much like most collaborations with Neon Genesis Evangelion today. You’ll also be able to get a Jewel Pack that lets you change the characters into their Summer Festival Version outfits.

Here are the Summer Festival Versions of the Evangelion characters as they appear in White Cat Project:

The last time Evangelion appeared in White Cat Project was in 2021. Back then, you could get the Spear of Longinus for free if you completed a specific quest. You could also get the original version of Rei Ayanami after completing the story, and you would have needed the Rebuild version to unlock her. All of the character art for this year’s Evangelion collaboration are, by default, the same as 2021’s.

White Cat Project is available on mobile devices. It is only available in Japanese and within Japan.

Of course, supplies are limited for both the can badges and the merchandise. So depending on when you go, you might not be able to find what you’re looking for.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a highly popular and influential anime that first appeared on TV in 1995. Since then, it’s spawned multiple manga adaptations, a light novel, and a series of anime films. Merchandise of the main characters and mecha still come out today. For example, Re-Ment recently announced a series of blind box figures featuring the characters sleeping inside egg-shaped containers.

Those who disagree with some of the entries on this list may want to keep an eye out for future opportunities to tell the world what the best anime song is.

The official Tower of Fantasy Twitter (X) has posted a trailer for the game’s collaboration event with Neon Genesis Evangelion, with Rei Ayanami taking the main stage. Rei will appear in the game from March 28, 2024.

In Tower of Fantasy, Rei fights with a bow and can shoot energy arrows, which is not something that she could do in the original Neon Genesis Evangelion. She can also summon her Unit-00 to attack enemies, as well as to activate its AT Field. You can unlock Rei as a simulacra for your characters during the event, much like how you can play as a simulacra version of Asuka.

Hotta Studio first announced its Neon Genesis Evangelion crossover event in early December 2023. During this time, we knew that Shinji, Rei, and Asuka would be prominent characters in the event, and that there would be a limited story, as well as exclusive costumes and mounts. Other items you can get during this event include the hair accessory that all Evangelion candidates wear, Asuka’s eyepatch, and a Pen Pen pet.

Tower of Fantasy is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. The Neon Genesis Evangelion event will end on April 29, 2024.

Sega will release a Luminasta figure of Ayanami Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion in a racing get-up. This is a prize figure that you’ll be able to get from crane game machines. [Thanks, Hobby Dengeki!]

The full name of this figure is Ayanami Rei Pit Walk. The outfit is based on what the motorsports models (race queen is the Japanese term) for Evangelion Racing wear. These outfits usually resemble the plugsuits that the pilots wear in the show. As for what Evangelion Racing is, it’s a real, official racing team that was first created to promote Rebuild of Evangelion in 2010.

Sega first unveiled this figure in September 2023. The Ayanami Rei Pit Walk figure has her in a white plugsuit-like outfit that shows her midriff. However, a piece of cloth covers up her belly button. In total, the figure stands at about 21 centimeters. She’ll also come with a hexagonal base to stand on.

Though the Neon Genesis Evangelion series is quite old at this point, its enduring popularity and recent theatrical releases means that many companies still release merchandise of its characters, or collaborate with the property. Aside from this Rei racing figure, there will be Look Up figures of Rei and Asuka. As well, Good Smile will release Nendoroids of Shinji and Kaworu. Tower of Fantasy will also hold a Neon Genesis Evangelion crossover event some time in 2024.

The Neon Genesis Evangelion Ayanami Rei Pit Walk racing figure will appear in crane games from the second week of January 2024.

Tower of Fantasy will hold a Neon Genesis Evangelion crossover event some time in 2024. The newest update for the game, Winter’s Electrifying Rhapsody, will launch on December 21, 2023. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

For the Neon Genesis Evangelion event, characters from the show will appear in the game. These characters are Shinji, Rei, and Asuka. There will be a limited time story, as well as exclusive costumes and mounts. More information on the crossover will appear some time in the future.

As for Winter’s Electrifying Rhapsody, this will be Version 3.5 of Tower of Fantasy. It’ll feature a new story, as well as new characters and weapons that you can collect. You can watch the trailer here:

Tower of Fantasy came out worldwide in 2022 for the Windows PC and mobile devices. The PS4 and PS5 versions came out in 2023. It is a futuristic MMORPG in which players can customize their own avatar and explore an open world. It features a hack-and-slash combat where players can swap between three different weapons at any time.

Tower of Fantasy is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Version 3.5 will come out on December 21, 2023, and the Evangelion event in Tower of Fantasy will appear some time in 2024.

Megahobby opened up pre-orders for the Look Up figures of Asuka and Rei from Evangelion. You’ll be able to pre-order them from Bandai but as a note, it does not offer international shipping and you cannot even view their site unless you’re in Japan.

Both figures cost 9,240 JPY ($62.75) together. They’ll also come with little cushions that you can sit them on. The Rei cushion is blue and the Asuka cushion is red. Pre-orders opened on December 7, 2023 and the figures will ship out some time in June 2024. Again, as a reminder, if you want to purchase these but live outside of Japan, you’ll have to either ask your local hobby shop if it plans on importing them or you’ll need to use a proxy service.

Megahouse first revealed prototypes of these figures back in November 2023. At the time, their eyes were the only parts of them that had color. While Rei mostly looks the same, the sculptors at Megahouse decided to close Asuka’s mouth and give her a smile instead. Originally, her mouth, while still smiling, was open. It’s unclear if this is to make her expression more of a contrast to Rei’s, or if it was more for aesthetic purposes.

Both limited edition bags feature the iconic NERV logo and iconography. Both bags also come with key carabiners with "NERV Tokyo-III" and the fictional institution's tagline "God's In His Heaven. All's Right With The World" printed on them.

The two limited edition NERV bags go up for pre-order on Cospa's website on December 3, and will remain available for pre-order until all available bags sell out. The bags will not be reproduced after they sell out, and will ship out late February 2024. Neon Genesis Evangelion can be streamed on Netflix.
