If you’re thinking about an anime game, especially on the Switch, odds are Bandai Namco is behind it. The company is well known for handling adaptations of titles. Especially if it is based on a Shonen Jump series. This can also mean there are a lot of games from each one on different systems. As part of Siliconera’s ongoing chronicling of games people should play, as they may have overlooked them, this week we’re focusing on the Switch anime ones worth some attention.

Best Bandai Namco Anime Games on the Switch Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth

Best Bandai Namco Digimon Game on the Switch: Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition 5m7048

Yes, Digimon qualifies as an anime series. (Why? I said so.) Especially since we’re recommending Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition here today. This is quite possibly a compilation of the two best Digimon games ever made. These RPGs are exceptional, and you can get them together for a ridiculous price.

However, a close second is Digimon Survive, which turned out to be way better than expected!

Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom

Best Bandai Namco Doraemon Game on the Switch: Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom 6f1x4q

A lot of quality of life updates appeared in Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom. Which means it makes a relaxing, enjoyable, Story of Seasons Switch farming game with characters from the Doraemon anime even more pleasant. It’s lighthearted and cozy.

Dragon Ball Fighterz

Best Bandai Namco Dragon Ball Game on the Switch: Dragon Ball FighterZ r3y15

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a phenomenal fighting game. The roster covers characters from all different arcs and installments. The balance is perfect. Arc System Works’ did an impeccable job with the character designs. It is fantastic.

Though honestly, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 should get an honorable mention here just because of its longevity.

Best Bandai Namco Anime Games on the Switch Naruto

Best Bandai Namco Naruto Game on the Switch: Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 6wkt

Someone unaware of Bandai Namco anime games and Naruto titles in general may not realize how good the Ultimate Ninja Storm series is and why they should play it even on the Switch. They’re genuinely engrossing and irable CyberConnect2 games! Their story modes can be a lot of fun. They’re a blast to play with friends, due to the character variety. The trilogy, which is also available on the platform, wouldn’t be the worst place to start. But I think the fourth one is just so much fun, especially since there’s Road to Boruto included with it.

One Piece Pirate Warriors 3

Best Bandai Namco One Piece Game on the Switch: One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 e2514

Koei Tecmo and Omega Force’s One Piece Pirate Warriors Musou games tend to always be solid anime inspired titles, and the Switch version of 3 is no exception. It’s also a good “introductory” game if you’re unfamiliar with the series. That’s because it starts from the beginning and goes all the way through the Straw Hat’s adventures in Dressrosa.

Sword Art Online SAO Alicization Lycoris

Best Bandai Namco Sword Art Online Game on the Switch: SAO Alicization Lycoris 62q2x

This is honestly a section that is very much a “your mileage may vary” situation. This is because a lot of Bandai Namco’s Sword Art Online anime games on the Switch cover specific arcs. So you might like one that covers a certain storyline you like more than others. Also, a lot of the gameplay can be similar, as these all tend to be RPGs. I think SAO Alicization Lycoris is the one I’d say is best, because there are quality of life adjustments, the combat is fun, and it tells a story I haven’t heard multiple times.

The plus side is, the Bandai Namco Sword Art Online games go on sale rather often, so you should be able to get one at an affordable price to test it out.

Other Bandai Namco Anime Games You Should Play on the Switch 18126v

Okay, there are also a lot of games from Bandai Namco that are tied to different anime series or even studios, but don’t fit into the categories above! They’re all definitely worth your time though, so we wanted to call them out here.

For example, .hack//G.U. Last Recode is a fantastic RPG. It ties into the .hack series, retelling the adventure of life in an MMO before SAO stole all of the attention. You get the remasters of Rebirth, Reminisce, and Redemption, as well as the new Reconnection experience.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a shockingly good soccer game. It also is especially fun due to its story mode. It isn’t Inazuma Eleven, of course, but it can fill the void while we wait to see when (if) that ever appears.

Our Gundam recommendation gets weird too, because it never ended up released officially outside Japan in English. There is an Asian English version of SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays
available, though! It’s a pretty great strategy game that taps into Gundam 00, Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans, Gundam SEED, and Gundam Wing.

There’s only one JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure game on the Switch, so it would feel a bit weird to “recommend” it in its own special category. But Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R is a fun remaster that adds additional characters! It did take away the story mode, so keep that in mind. There’s a demo you can try for this one!

It would be kind of weird to include My Hero One’s Justice 2 above, given there are only two games. The sequel improves on every element of this 3D arena fighter, adding better balancing, more characters, and a still entertaining campaign. So if you want a MHA game on the Switch, the sequel is the way to go.

Finally, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch also qualifies! Studio Ghibli was heavily involved in this charming RPG. The sequel is also quite good, but there’s something truly magical about Oliver’s original adventure.

digimon story cyber sleuth interview 1

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth helped renew interest in the series outside of Japan. The game has given people a chance to enjoy collecting and raising Digimon on multiple platforms, most recently preserving a great series on the Nintendo Switch and PC. Now, Siliconera’s had a chance to speak with Producer Habu Kazumasa about both of these titles. He opens up about its influences, the worldwide reception, Mastemon, and Digimon Story’s future.

Siliconera: Which past Digimon games most influenced the two Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth titles? How about which unrelated games?

Habu Kazumasa: Cyber Sleuth was a title that was developed with player in mind. In order to reboot the Digimon Story series, I shaped a plan with the developer on the assumption that we never go off the basic concept of the Digimon Story series. That is why we kept the simple playstyle of a turn-based RPG with leveling, which allows everyone to play without reading instructions.

In addition to that, we did everything to guarantee the same amount of Digimon to train as the first Digimon Story game released on Nintendo DS, so that the gameplay was focused on collecting and training various Digimon. It was very tough recreating what used to be in pixels & sprites and transform them into 3D, but it came true thanks to all of the staff at Media Vision, the developer.

Also, we received regarding the DS version of Digimon Story where players could not see their own Digimon during battle even though players want to see the Digimon they trained actively battle. In response to the , we focused on creating attractive renderings of Digimon during a simple turn-based battle; which became possible with 3D. We had done this once for the PSP Digimon Adventure, and I thought we could leverage the know-how to create and render Digimon in Cyber Sleuth.

Also, I think the reason why renderings such as special skills and victory motions are highly ired is because of a development staff member, who is a huge Digimon fan, that put a lot of effort into studying minor Digimon and reproducing them.

The story itself is structured based on the settings created for the LCD games: Digital Monster to Digimon Adventure. We composed a storyline which questioned how people build a relationship with Digimon. They were once seen as AI programs in Cyberspace or life forms from another world who started invading the real world as a threat. I think one of the charms of Digimon is to portray a story of how values would change though encounters of humans and unseen life forms; on the premise that essentially Digimon do not exist in the human world. I would like to keep this theme as one of the main subjects for future titles.

As for Hacker’s Memory, my inspiration is the quartet of minor characters called Van Gang from Durarara!!!, illustrated by Suzuhito Yasuda sensei, who was in charge of character design for Hacker’s Memory. I wanted to express that even minor characters who are not highlighted in a world-saving story have their own stories in the same world.

digimon story cyber sleuth interview nokia

Were you surprised by the warm reception to both Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth games outside of Japan?

Kazumasa: When Cyber Sleuth was under development, overseas distributors were not as open to the localization of Digimon. They said the target demographic skewed towards children and the Digimon anime wasn’t popular. Despite such doubts, Cyber Sleuth was finally localized (it had been a while since the last Digimon game) thanks to a petition that thousands of fans ed.

When it was launched, I wasn’t sure how many players would play the game because it’s been some time since there was a localized Digimon game. Therefore, I was very surprised by the large number of players who purchased and played this title.

We can keep creating Digimon games because of the fans around the world.

The game will continue to express the amazing world of Digimon, and the continuous of fans will be greatly appreciated.

Do you see the Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth storyline continuing in any form in a new installment?

Kazumasa: The story of Cyber Sleuth ends at Hacker’s Memory.

As for the Digimon Story series, we are planning to continue new development, so please look forward to that.

The world described in the game, however, is connected as a multiverse, so the characters who appeared in Cyber Sleuth, and characters I have created, might appear in another game as guest characters.

mastemon digimon story cyber sleuth interview

Mastemon was the new character created for Cyber Sleuth. What were the goals with this Digimon’s design?

Kazumasa: One of the main concepts behind creating the original Digimon; Mastemon for Cyber Sleuth was to use the DNA Digivolution that combines various attributes and characteristics from LadyDevimon and Angewomon. Mastemon was created in this universe, being able to utilize a tremendous force that consists of two opposing attributes from both angels and demons, suring even the dimensional walls.

Originally, Mastemon was planned to be introduced as Mirei Mikagura’s partner in Digimon World Re:Digitalize for the PSP. Unfortunately, due to various issues we couldn’t make this idea come true.

In order to add a deeper meaning to opposing attributes together, I requested that the design of the original Digimon follow a two-tone black & white color scheme, much like what you see in the Lucemon Chaos Mode.

The first concept art that the designers came up with was very well done, having Mastemon equipped with various large armaments such as cannons. However, I personally did not want the overall design to take on a bulky appearance or focus on a power-up art direction. So, I requested the redesign of Mastemon to strip most of all the large armaments, and instead focus on using the Digimon’s body as a weapon.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition is available on the Nintendo Switch and PC. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is immediately on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita physically, though you need to import for a handheld copy. Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker’s Memory is available digitally and physically on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. (Again, you have to import for the handheld copy.)

digimon story cyber sleuth complete edition 2

It is a good time to be a Digimon fan. Digimon ReArise has given people worldwide a free-to-play game for their mobile devices. The Digimon X3 is coming out. Both Digimon Survive and Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna will arrive in 2020. And now, two of the best Digimon RPGs in recent memory have found new homes right after one of them was delisted from the PlayStation Store. Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition has arrived on the Nintendo Switch and PC and, well, they’re both still pretty great games. Even better, now people have them the way they are meant to be played, together.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition gives people two RPGs for essentially what the price of one was originally. The two titles within are companion pieces that complement one another. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth follows a hacker named Aiba, an avatar people can customize and make decisions with. They find themselves digitized after an encounter with a monstrous digital creature while exploring Kowloon, a den where hackers hang out in Cyberspace EDEN. A detective named Kyoko helps Aiba while having them help with her investigations. It’s a massive JRPG with battling and investigations where you learn more about hackers, the Eater that corrupted Aiba and other victims, Digimon and the digital world, and a Cyberspace EDEN update. It’s amazing to see how everything all comes together.

digimon story cyber sleuth complete edition 1

While Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is the main attraction and stronger of the two games, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker’s Memory is just as good and a fun time. It’s just that it is essentially a fan-disc. It’s a supplemental adventure that is set during the events of the previous game, with a predetermined protagonist named Keisuke. His identity was stolen and used to commit crimes, ruining his life in the process. He heads into Cyberspace EDEN to investigate leads, instead ending up getting a Digimon and ing a hacker group called Hudie. The group helps individuals, while also dealing with Digimon, Eaters, hackers, and other unfortunate situations. Since it’s happening while the other game does, pretty much everyone from there is here. I suppose you could play it on its own, but it is a companion and assumes that you are aware of Cyberspace EDEN, certain hackers and individuals, and Digimon. (Also, there was the whole ability to carry over save data so you could import things like your field guide and medals.)

What is really nice about this collection is having Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition on the Nintendo Switch. In general, the Digimon Story offshoots have always been handheld, starting with Digimon Story DS. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth started on the PlayStation Vita, and it really fits well as the sort of handheld RPG you can take it anywhere. It’s perfect in short doses, if you want to tend to Digimon briefly and visit them on the farm, or in extended play sessions. Plus, you can save practically anywhere at any time. In short, it’s convenient. Not that the PC version also isn’t great. This is exactly the sort of DIgimon JRPG that people who prefer that platform should also have access to. Just there’s something about having a good creature-collecting game that you can enjoy so readily.

digimon story cyber sleuth complete edition 3

There’s also the delisting issue. Bandai Namco has removed Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth without warning before. The PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita digital copies aren’t available outside of Japan anymore. Worse, the PlayStation Vita version wasn’t available physically everywhere. Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker’s Memory remains in the store, but for who knows how long? Having this Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition compilation on two new platforms is a way to keep it alive and preserve access to these notable JRPGs. Especially since you can get the Nintendo Switch version digitally or physically and, in this instance, both games are on the cartridge. There’s no additional to make sure you have the full game.

Both games in the Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth storyline are great JRPGs with creature catching and raising elements. They look amazing and colorful, whether you’re playing on a Nintendo Switch or PC. Each one is going to take you at least forty hours. Plus, distributing these games on as many platforms is great to not only increase exposure, but to give people a better chance to acquire and have it after already some known delistings.

Bandai Namco has identified a Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition save game issue in the Japanese version of the game. It all comes down to a comma. If someone puts one in their name, then attempts to save their game, it won’t. Fortunately, 1.0.2 will fix the issue.

A date for the version 1.0.2 update has not been announced. Bandai Namco only noted that it will arrive sometime in the future. Once applied, people will be able to use a comma in their characters’ names. Fortunately, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition isn’t yet available, so people were warned about this name issue ahead of launch.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition will show up on the Nintendo Switch and PC in Japan on October 17, 2019 and in other regions on October 18, 2019.

Today on Twitter, Digimon video game series producer Habumon commented on the recently announced Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition for Switch & PC, and Digimon Survive delay.

On Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition, Habumon added a few details to the announcement, which we’ve translated below:

“The Switch version of Hacker’s Memory is basically the same as the PS4 and Vita versions. The only difference is that DLC that were released later on are available in the base game, and that some of the billboards in game have changed designs due to contractual reasons. Please look forward to the game.”

Regarding Digimon Survive, he had this to say:

“Regarding Survive, the planned release date has been changed to 2020 because of a reorganization of our game development structure. Sorry to keep you waiting. Once again, I feel deeply the hardships of game development… We will continue to develop the game in order to make it a good product, so please look forward to it.”
